Aware of the need for a sports dog club that would welcome all breeds at all levels of competition, Avon Dog Sports Group was formed by a small group of dog sport enthusiasts in 2009. The charter members reflected on and emphasised this concept right from the start. Our group’s range of expertise include handlers just beginning with their first ever dog to Dave Edmunds, our Head Trainer; one of the founder members of the first schutzhund organisation (BSA) in Great Britain. Dave has trialled dogs in Working Trials since 1965 and in Schutzhund / VPG since 1991.

We never forget that our primary purpose remains the fun we have and enjoyment we get and the love we feel spending time with our canine friends.

Our club members include individuals from various walks of life bringing with them different breeds of dogs, and we certainly welcome and thrive on this diversity.

As with most Schutzhund / VPG clubs, we embrace the training culture – the camaraderie and closeness that comes along with dedicated training, good sportsmanship, and the love of working as one with our canine team members. We recognise the individual abilities, assets, and talents each handler/dog team brings to the field and encourage each member to cultivate those special qualities to the best of his/her ability. We emphasise obedience – control and safety – as the first step taken on the road along which all dreams and goals are realised.

Regardless of your training level, we encourage participation and revel with excitement whenever a new member comes into the sport, ASDG looks forward to the challenges and opportunities that dog sport brings.

Group Objectives

• To train and compete working dogs in the sports of Schutzhund / VPG and Working Trials

• To promote and support responsible dog ownership

• To promote motivational training methods

• To support and encourage all members in accomplishing their training goals and objectives

• To hold Schutzhund / VPG trials, seminars and training events to enable our members and friends to evaluate our dogs and training.

We are proud of our friendship and close links with Avon Working Trials Training Society and Severnside Schutzhund Group.
